Hi,
My name is Matthew Randall and I'm glad you found our website. My mission this year is to introduce the benefits of martial arts training to you and everyone in our community. I have been training in the martial arts for over 25 years and it has literally changed my life. Let me share a little story with you and see if this sounds familiar...
When I was in grade school I was not a very outgoing boy. I had a select group of friends who were misfits like me. We didn't belong to any sports teams, we liked to read and enjoyed school except for the fact that we were bullied, criticized, and called names. I was the smallest and skinniest boy in my class. To make matters worse, when I was in sixth grade I needed to wear glasses. (probably from too much reading)
Advancing into middle school didn't help much as I was not athletic and a bit socially awkward. I simply didn't fit in and nobody would have me on a team. Individual sports were not abundant in the 70's especially for boys unless you played tennis. Martial arts training, at that time, was really only for adults as the 'secret teachings' could not be trusted to children.
High School for me was a disaster. Girls, zits, peer pressure, and cliques were a bad combination for a boy who was not socially gifted, athletic, or wealthy. Being an outsider meant being a target for bullies. I was harassed in the hallways and physically abused on occasion. I remember during freshman year that the kid who had a locker next to mine would use me as a human wall so that he could sell drugs between classes. I was not confident enough to tell anyone.
And then there came an awakening!
My parent's were very loving and supportive, but I never had the courage to complain so they never knew how sad and lonely I really was or just how low my self-esteem had sunk. One day after being accosted in the hallway by a small group of bullies, I finally decided that enough was enough. The summer after my sophomore year, I hunted down every martial arts school in driving distance and watched classes. I watched kenpo, karate, kung fu, and taekwondo classes. I finally decided to join a taekwondo school in Dover because out of all the classes I saw, it was the most disciplined and most physically demanding. I took that as a personal challenge.
For the first time in my life, I felt like I belonged somewhere. Everyone in class was friendly and supportive. Even though I was just 16 and most of the other students were college age, they welcomed me openly. I was not naturally gifted, but as long as I trained hard, I had their respect. I was taught good self-defense skills and discipline. Respect was learned and earned.
Since starting in the martial arts more than 25 years ago, I have competed in 3 world championships earning a bronze medal in The Soviet World Championships and a gold medal from Korea. I am a 6th Degree Black Belt and have a thriving business with many wonderful students who are my extended family. Not bad for a shy kid with low self-esteem and no athletic skill.
Reality check!
When I look back to think what might have happened to my life without martial arts training, it is humbling. Today the statistics of childhood suicide and homicide resulting from bullying is absolutely horrifying. In fact, suicide is the third-leading cause of death for 15- to 24-year-olds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), surpassed only by accidents and homicide. By now everyone knows the causes of the horrific shootings at Columbine and other schools. It was bullying that drove them to brink and over the edge.
I'm not saying that was the track I was on, but it could have been quite easily. Even worse, I may have floundered on for years as an adult with low self-esteem, bouncing from job to low-end job. When I say that martial arts training saved my life, I mean it saved me from a life of almost certain boredom, frustration, and lack of accomplishment.
It's all about Leadership!
We all learn from our past and attempt to make the future better by our experience. What I learned from my life before martial arts training is that low self-esteem and a lack of confidence is a miserable way to live. What I learned from my life since training in martial arts is that it's not about the kicking and punching...it's all about Leadership!
When I first started training, classes were very physically demanding and I learned how to create power. Physical power led to developing great confidence in my skills as a technician. But it wasn't until I began teaching that I really learned the true power of martial arts training.
Being in front of class of students and having them consider me as a role-model was not an easy or comfortable position for this shy kid. You see, while my physical skills were getting pretty good, my confidence in other areas had not yet been developed. Through teaching I began to learn confidence in public speaking, stage presence, leading by example, and strong body posture. It is by being a leader that I finally understood the true and complete meaning of confidence. The physical and the mental must work together along with the opportunity to practice both in a supportive environment.
So what does this have to do with me?
If you are reading this and wondering how it applies to you or your children, then think about this...where can you or your child develop physical strength, speed, and power, combined with the opportunity to learn real leadership skills, communication, and confidence? This is what makes Matt Randall's Black Belt Academy, Inc. the best martial arts school anywhere in the area.
Through my varied experience over the past 25 years, I have designed this Academy to give every student the opportunity and skills to develop real confidence and leadership...body, mind, and spirit. You won't find that on the baseball field or the gymnastics floor, and unfortunately you won't find it in school either. Our Leadership Program is specifically designed to teach confidence and leadership from day one, not after Black Belt. Students in our Leadership program are daily given opportunities to be leaders, role-models, and to practice their public speaking. And by the way, they are great at self-defense, too.
